A Goldendoodle named for a grandfather, with a story that started with a surprising trip to Port Elgin.
His story
How Hairold came home.
Hairold was born January 7, 2022. In March 2022, his future owner spotted a Kijiji listing in Port Elgin. The older man caring for the puppy had only had him a few days when his circumstances changed his plans. What mattered most to him was finding “Oscar” a good home.
On Tuesday, March 15, an early-morning drive to Port Elgin brought that puppy home and was sleeping in his new owner’s arms by the following night. The name Oscar stayed behind, but the memory of that unexpected day did not.
The name
Harold, with a little more hair.
A name with family rootsHarold was his owner’s grandfather, known as Papa. His mother had no idea a puppy was coming home that morning. Her first reaction was surprise; then she saw him and said, “Aw, he is cute.”
One letter makes it his ownHis mother wasn’t ready to call her late father’s name across the backyard. For a little while she called the pup “Hairy.” Hairold became the official name: there’s no “i” in Harold, but there is in Hairold.
Remembering CobyAt the time, the family was also caring for Coby, an elderly Maltese-poodle who needed help with the stairs. They said goodbye to Coby a few months later. Hairold’s arrival remains part of that family chapter.

He’s happiest running after a ball, carrying a stick on an off-leash trail where it is permitted, or settling into Grandma’s bed. On walks, he often barks at other dogs—with a few exceptions for dogs who look like him or catch his eye.

The first-night chapter.
A car cleanup, a crate cleanup, a bed cleanup—and a move to the spare room. Hairold’s first night was memorable. His owner says it was his only indoor bathroom mishap.
